Hotel housekeepers around the world took action to highlight their fight for rights and recognition during the IUF 5th Global Week of Action from October 8-14.

Through their unions, housekeepers are demanding decent pay, secure jobs, safe workplaces and negotiations on measures to prevent the sexual harassment which afflicts workers in the hotel industry. This year, unions in many countries focused on conveying their demands to the largest global hotel companies. IUF members around the world also used the action week to show solidarity with striking members of UNITE HERE at Marriott hotels across the US. ...  Preberi več

Tourism is growing and workers deserve their fair share

7 November marks European Tourism Day. Today, once again, the EU champions one of the most rapidly expanding sectors of the European economy, accounting for 10% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 7% of world exports and one in ten jobs worldwide.

Tourism is one of the few sectors of the European economy with a high potential for growth and job creation, particularly providing an entry into the labor market for young people, women and people with migrant background. Yet, it is characterized by a high percentage of atypical employment, high staff turnover and seasonal workers. ...  Preberi več

Personal Pensions must guarantee savings

Posted on Posted in Effat
The ETUC calls for pension savings to be fully protected in the proposal for Pan-European Personal Pension which will now go to negotiations between the EU Institutions, following the vote in the EP’s Economic Affairs Committee earlier this week.

The Committee failed to ensure that PEPP providers would be required to guarantee workers’ pension savings when investing them on the financial market. The Committee did achieve some improvements in the role of European and national monitoring authorities, the reference to preferential investment of funds with good governance and positive environmental and social impacts. Also, a “basic option” would be available to all savers with obligatory explanatory information. The ETUC calls on the negotiations to ensure more guarantees to savers. It also calls for a regulatory system that does not compete with collective pension schemes. ...  Preberi več

Ryanair workers active across Europe

The company that was notorious for its refusal to recognise and negotiate with unions changed this policy in December 2017. However, bargaining did not really come off the ground. The latest actions led to agreements in Ireland and Italy.
