We are IUF!

Posted on Posted in Effat
The 27th IUF Congress, held in Geneva from August 29 to September 1, 2017, was the largest, most representative, and most participatory Congress in our history. Of the 518 participants from around the world, 339 official delegates took part in the work of the Congress – an increase of nearly 29% over 2012. All regions and sectors were strongly represented in a Congress marked by a high degree of enthusiasm, militancy and solidarity.

The Congress was structured around 4 major themes, each building on existing struggles and concluding with concrete objectives for the IUF and its members: organizing and fighting for well-paid jobs with dignity, rights and stability; organizing and fighting to make our workplaces safe and healthy; organizing and fighting for equality and diversity; and organizing and fighting for progressive, democratic politics. ...  Preberi več

Huge support for McDonalds workers’ first ever strike in the UK

Posted on Posted in Effat
Today, on US Labour Day holiday, McDonalds’ fast food workers in Cambridge and Crayford (South-East London) are set to go for the first ever strike in the UK to coordinate action against the fast food giant with allies around the world.

Organised by EFFAT‘s affiliate Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU), McDonalds’ workers are demanding: (I) 10 £ an hour minimum wage; (II) An end to zero hours contracts; (III) Recognition of their trade unions.

In April 2017, McDonalds had promised workers guaranteed-hours contracts to all employees who wanted them. However, the BFAWU claims that workers at most stores were told nothing about this until the strike was announced. Now, workers and BFAWU rightly want this as a done deal which would represent a major victory for the some 80,000 workers at McDonald’s, and a successful example of workers’ organizing. ...  Preberi več

Workers to vote for better wages, job security and respect at Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Posted on Posted in Effat
On August 18, 350 workers at Carlson Rezidor’s Radisson Hotel Kathmandu in Nepal will vote for union representation in collective bargaining. The IUF-affiliated Nepal Independent Hotel Workers’ Union (NIHWU) has won significant gains for hotel workers over the past 37 years, including improved wages and benefits, job security, and actively pushing for implementation of the industry-wide agreement on 10% service charge in hotels, restaurants and fast food so that it is fairly distributed to all workers.

NIHWU represents hotel and tourism workers in various government and tripartite meetings, and promotes the need for sustainable jobs as part of sustainable tourism. NIHWU is active in the IUF Global Housekeeping Campaign and Climate Justice for Tourism Workers.

Rights abuses at luxury hotel in Manila!

Posted on Posted in Effat
The IUF-affiliated Peninsula Employees Union has filed for industrial action at the upscale hotel in response to management’s aggressive attacks on working conditions and basic workplace rights.

Management’s refusal to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement in good faith has provoked the threat of a major industrial dispute, compounding tensions arising from ongoing harassment and disciplinary action against union leaders.

The Brexit negotiations will have a big impact on the most vulnerable workers
The outcome of the upcoming negotiations between the European authorities and the United Kingdom over its exit from the European Union (EU) may have a huge impact on workers’ rights, in the UK but also in the rest of Europe, according to a report commissioned by the Trades Union Congress (TUC). The ones occupying the lowest rungs on the labour market may be the main losers in terms of workplace rights. ...  Preberi več

Europe Needs a Pay Rise

Posted on Posted in Effat
There is a virtuous circle in which pay rises allow workers to spend more money on goods and services, which is good for business and creates jobs.
  • It’s time for OUR recovery: profits and CEO pay have recovered from the crisis, but too many workers have NOT felt a recovery.
  • have paid the price for the crisis, now it is time for pay rises for all workers.
  • The best way to get a pay rise is by collective bargaining… through a trade union.

Collective bargaining needs to be strengthened, and more workers should be covered by a collective agreement.

Strong unions mean higher wages and better conditions for everyone. Workers covered by a collective agreement are better off than workers in companies NOT covered by a collective agreement. They are more likely to get a fairer share of the profits generated, earn more money, get a holiday bonus and take part in company training. Organizations covered by a collective agreement have a smaller gender pay gap. ...  Preberi več

May Day is Our Day!

Posted on Posted in Effat
May Day, which began in the struggle of US workers for the 8-hour day, has been celebrated around the world since 1890 as International Labour Day. Its force lies in its global character: it is the day when workers around the world announce their commitment to struggle together for common goals.

May Day has been repressed, banned and bloodied; it has been co-opted, appropriated as a symbolic ornament for dictators and authoritarian regimes at war with the labour movement, or turned into a harmless bank holiday. Despite this, labour celebrates May Day with confidence, for we know that society rests on our energy, our eyes, hands, brains and backs. ...  Preberi več

Everyone’s health and safety counts!

Posted on Posted in Effat
On International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD 2017), EFFAT, ETUFs and ETUC want to deliver a strong message: Everyone’s health and safety at work matters – for workers, his or her family and loved ones, and for employers.

With over 168,000 people dying every year from work-related accidents and diseases, and over 3 million reported accidents at work (those resulting in at least four days’ absence from work), health and safety at work is a very serious issue for everyone.

One of EFFAT’s core activity is to ensure health and safety standards in its sectors: ...  Preberi več
